"Incipit Vita Nova"298 viewsPersephone, 2517, the year Dr. Simon Tam first sets foot aboard Serenity. A pivotal moment that marks the beginning of a new life for River and her brother. This piece shows Simon, on the ramp of Serenity, where he meets Kaylee, who introduces him to Mal (O.S.). That pose of Simon alone, briefcase in hand, is enough to make me want to cry. He looks so out of place! And he is. All because of River, for whom he sacrificed everything, just so she could be safe. This is a man who, were it not for his great love for River, would never be here! The Title is taken from Dante's "La Vita Nuova" (= The New Life). And we see a page, supposedly from Simon's diary, which reads, paraphrased after Dante, "In that book which is my memory, on the first page of the chapter that is the day when I first entered Serenity, appear the words: Here begins a new life (= Incipit Vita Nova)."1 commentsalbatross02/11/09 at 10:11albatross: Now, a word on the work.

"Never knew I was lonely, until I was not alone."110 viewsIt is late-night (11:15 PM, to be precise); and we find Dr. T'Soni in her Normandy quarters. sitting at her desk, alone, working on her journal. The rest of the Crew is either in the Mess Hall, or has already turned in. Not Liara. She is used to working alone, and generally prefers the solitude. Today was an enervating day for her. She had managed to get herself stuck in a Prothean contraption at Therum, was attacked by geth and a very nasty Krogan, and subsequently rescued by Commander Shepard, who -- despite the potential risk -- welcomed her aboard the Normandy. So here she is. making an entry in her journal. Yes, today was different. For the first time she realizes she's been lonely for quite a while. It never much bothered her before, really; but, earlier, when she was talking with Commander Shepard, she had felt sad when the Commander left, and suddenly wasn't too eager to isolate herself at a new dig site for yet another 50 years.

Okay, that long-winded bit is the theme. :) Hence, the Title: "Never knew I was lonely, until I was not alone." (Extended Commentary below)

In a room with a psychic91 views"And you put them in a room with a psychic." That's the theme. Like my Badger piece, meant to be simple, but effective. I hope you like it; it took a fair spell to make, at least. (Extended Commentary below)1 commentsalbatross01/24/08 at 11:28albatross: Extended Commentary

Serenity83 viewsWhen I ran into the quote, I knew I had a theme. :) A pretty good one, actually (my feeble execution thereof notwithstanding, lol), because it's the epithome of what it means to be aboard Serenity. Mal's Way102 viewsHaven. Mal, mostly to himself, I reckon, says: "I had an out. Hell, I had every reason in the 'verse to leave her lay and haul anchor." Upon which Books utters the truest words ever offered a human soul in this crap-heel 'verse: "It's not your way, Mal." Mal chooses not to abandon River. This is the theme. The difference between day and night is that of the light in this 'verse deciding to do the right thing or not (Extended Commentary below).1 commentsalbatross06/28/07 at 17:43albatross: The idea that it really only takes one man in the ...

Back to my roots: River. :) I always wanted to do this theme. It depicts how Serenity became a home for River. (Extended Commentary below).

Life - A Tribute to Zoe108 views
I've chosen a theme that, for some reason, is not often spoken of: the fact that Wash and Zoe would have had a child together. This whole theme works because of the one cute fact that Zoe means "Life" in Greek. Eleven inherent metaphoric parallels already there. :) Extended Commentary below.

"Running to, not from."81 views
When I was watching The Message, I heard Tracey say: "Running to, not from." And all of a sudden I got this lovely Kaylee idea. :) Well, whether it's lovely I'll leave up to you, but here I am. The symbolism of this small piece is simple. When Kaylee has a hard time, she runs towards her sanctuary, the one place she feels completely at home: her engine room. (Extended Commentary below).

"Noah's Ark is a problem."178 views
Another piece in River's "vision" series. The central figure is River, reading the story of Noah's Ark. The foreground River, from OiS, is the visualization of River at the table, trying to picture the story. Since River is, as it were, projecting the scene, notice the absence of water behind her! (because she only sees extra 'props', so to speak, where her focus is). The Bible page on the right I scanned is actually of the story of Noah's Ark, and is meant to remind the viewer that everything River 'sees', she sees while reading Book's Bible. Composition-wise, instead of painstakingly trying to edit out the original upward branch from her hair, I found what I thought was an elegant solution: I removed part of side of her hair, and had it merge with the hair, also hanging down, from the River at the table. And I think it works surprisingly well. All-in-all, at least I feel I succeeded in taking this well-known River pose from OiS, and doing something completely different with it.

Images of broken light124 views
This theme is based on the lyrics of "Across The Universe" (Lennon/McCartney). "Images of broken light" are what draw Simon to go rescue his little sister: "Images of broken light which dance before me like a million eyes, they call me on and on across the universe." On the left we see Simon, looking at the images of broken light: River-That-Was and the shadow of her former self after the Academy got their hands on her. Despite his high social status and wealth, Simon can no longer bear it, and goes after her: "Limitless, undying love which shines around me like a million suns, it calls me on and on across the universe." The lyrics suit him well. It's Love. In point of fact. (Extended Commentary below).

"A leap of faith"121 views
Okay, my first Kaylee piece. :) For this theme I took the lyrics from Natasha Bedingfield's "I bruise easily." Kaylee, like River, is vulnerable. But unlike River, Kaylee's vulnerability is a conscious way of being (while maybe not an active choice, she sees no reason to change; and rightly so). Kaylee's heart is open; that's what makes her vulnerable, for good or for bad. As the song goes: "Anyone who can touch you, can hurt you or heal you." Kaylee chooses to risk the hurt. Because she has faith in people. I admire that in her, greatly. There's always the risk of being hurt. "But If I never take this leap of faith, I'll never know. So I'm learning to fall with no safety net to cushion the blow." Beautiful lyrics, really; very Kaylee. And very me. Sigh. I love my Mechanic. (Extended commentary below.)
