"Never knew I was lonely, until I was not alone."
|
It is late-night (11:15 PM, to be precise); and we find Dr. T'Soni in her Normandy quarters. sitting at her desk, alone, working on her journal. The rest of the Crew is either in the Mess Hall, or has already turned in. Not Liara. She is used to working alone, and generally prefers the solitude. Today was an enervating day for her. She had managed to get herself stuck in a Prothean contraption at Therum, was attacked by geth and a very nasty Krogan, and subsequently rescued by Commander Shepard, who -- despite the potential risk -- welcomed her aboard the Normandy. So here she is. making an entry in her journal. Yes, today was different. For the first time she realizes she's been lonely for quite a while. It never much bothered her before, really; but, earlier, when she was talking with Commander Shepard, she had felt sad when the Commander left, and suddenly wasn't too eager to isolate herself at a new dig site for yet another 50 years.
Okay, that long-winded bit is the theme. :) Hence, the Title: "Never knew I was lonely, until I was not alone." (Extended Commentary below)

The base image is that of Liara sitting at her desk, 'shot' from a camera position (far left corner of her desk) that cannot be mistaken for a human perspective -- making it clear she's alone in the room. It's late in the evening, so the mood is that of a softly dimmed ambient atmosphere, with only a small, halogen-type table-light on her desktop. Her bright-blue illuminated laptop keyboard colorizes the spot-light's cast, towards her, accordingly (though only faintly visible, I added an actual light-source 'inside' the table light).
The whole image is actually a confluence of 5 (!) different realities/angles:
1): Liara, in the center, sitting at her desk;
2): A perspective from directly behind her laptop (Liara on the left);
3): The most complex one: a view, seen through Liara's eyes, looking at (an abstract form of) that table-light, casting that blue-ish light towards her (front center). This perspective is not absolute/literal, of course, and is primarily based on light-play.
4): Femshep (far right), 'walking in' (to her, Liara's desk now acts like a pavement of sorts). Femshep is 'caught' in the same blue-ish light, too.
5): Femshep, looking at what appears to be a floating bill-board. It is through her eyes that we can witness what Liara is actually writing in her journal (that 'bill-board', in turn, is visually connected to Liara's laptop screen via a faint light/motion-trail -- which, quite conveniently, also immediately afforded me a means and good 'excuse' to highlight the middle Liara figurine some). The late hour (11:15 PM) of the scene can be seen in the status-bar of her word-processor window, btw.
And, if you will,
6): The 'spotlight' view of 3) is, can also be seen as an abstact representation of an 'eye'. In fact, when I first began thinking on making this, that was the original idea. :) I just couldn't do anything further with it, so I just abandoned it and went with an, IMHO, much better idea.
The orange color of her desktop screen (on the left) is matched in the 'bill-board', of course. That bright-orange, translucent panel can still be seen in the 'behind-the-laptop' view; though, naturally, I couldn't make it span the entire screen (which it normally nearly would). So, instead I let the orange, downward-reflection of the floating 'bill-board' hit the desk underneath (at a similar height), so that, conceptually, the orange panel from reality 2) is still protracted to the right, even thought it 'officially' ends when the desk begins.
